Discussing LGBTQ Identities Through Children’s Literature with Second Grade Students<\/em><\/h3>\n

The purpose of this action research study was to learn about the potential of children’s literature as a resource in teaching and discussing LGBTQ identities and issues with second grade students. The investigation responded to the following research questions: 1) Can children’s literature featuring LGBTQ themes and\/or characters contribute to the development of young children’s understanding of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations? 2) How can educators address hegemonic norms as found in children’s literature related to gender and sexuality in grade level? 3) What children’s texts provide an appropriate and accurate representation of LGBTQ characters and narratives for young children? Using qualitative research methods, including text analysis, notes, audio recordings, and student artifacts, the results of this study found that children’s literature engaged students to articulate their current understanding of LGBTQ identities, as well as critically analyze the themes and language presented in these texts.’–Abstract, p. 1.<\/div>\n
