Europeans gay and straight, as well as those of every class populate a novel no-one can put down. Charlie is not quite – actually not at all – declasse as an English aristocrat but she is also very much a playwright and, indeed, a Parisian. Known as a writer, and a lover, here she falls in love perhaps for the first time. In the circumstances, Anna, a very bohemian painter, may be an unlikely choice.
