Nearly midnight in London’s derelict Hackney on a wet, windy,dark night, but not so dark that Rats (after her rat’s tail hair) doesn’t see the Rolls with the body slumped inside. No phone boxes work, no one else on the street:so she clutches her hideous secret and makes for home.<\/p>\n

In the days and months that follow, Rats experiences the city with increasing menace-as though existing on the margins, a lesbian ‘unlucky in love’, unemployed, a Northener, living alone at the mercy of unscrupulous landlords wasn’t bad enough. And her job, when she finally lands one, is more evidence of a city in decay- a seedy accomodation agency, teetering on the edge of legality. In her waking and dreaming hours, fraud,corruption and the murder glide even nearer, as silent and threatening as the hovering Rolls, but she fights them all. Even the return of her lover, Helen, doesn’t divert her from her obsessive attempts to track down the killer.<\/p>\n
