Ah, Provincetown. An oasis of lazy days, ocean air, and frosty summer drinks \u0096 the perfect place to relax and bond while soaking up the summer sun. At least, that’s the plan when long-time couple Claire and Rita initiate newbies Kit and Sabi to the pleasure of Provincetown. But from the first flat tire to the constant delays (can anyone say “hold it in”?) on the road to the Cape, it’s clear that this is one ride that will be anything but smooth.<\/p>\n

Claire may be in a relationship with Rita, but that doesn’t mean she doesn’t notice the attractive and extremely available Dara, who seems to bump into Claire at every available opportunity…<\/p>\n

Rita is no fool \u0096 and she is anything but happy about Dara’s unwelcome attentions to Claire. Of course, two can play that game, and Dara’s ex, Becca, seems to need a shoulder to cry on, too…<\/p>\n

Kit is having second thoughts about inviting her friend Diane along for the ride. Too many friends at one time can get to be a little too much. Especially when the other houseguest, Grant, forgets her manners \u0096 and that Diane isn’t “family” – and makes the world’s biggest faux pas of a pass.<\/p>\n

Sabi would be happy if the foursome could dump the obnoxious Pat, who seems to have something to say about everything and everyone \u0096 and likes to say it to Kit. P-Town was supposed to be a romantic getaway, but now Sabi’s not sure exactly who is getting away with what…<\/p>\n

Before anyone can say, “another Jack Daniels please,” the girls’ idyllic week is wildly out of control, prompting accusations, rejections, attractions, and a whole lot of questions. Can four females \u0096 and their respective relationships \u0096 survive the tempests and temptations of a week among the beautiful and the butch, the maddening and the manipulative, the needy and the needling?<\/p>\n

Like an episode of I Love Lucy (if Lucy and Ethel were a couple), Lisa Stocker’s outrageously entertaining debut novel is great fun in the sun \u0096 a book as sassy, seductive, and real as a P-Town Summer.<\/p>\n

Fans of summertime soaps may enjoy this tale of one lesbian couple introducing another to the joys of that summertime gay mecca on Cape Cod: Provincetown. Trials before treats, however: first, the terrible Boston-to-the-Cape traffic, made worse by Sabi’s pea-sized bladder. Then there are the accommodations at Stella the parsimonious innkeeper’s–at least the rooms are lousy with character, like Stella herself. Next, the mosquitoes, seemingly of the size and with the bite of lions and tigers and bears: ow my! The intrepid vacationers, awed by the magnificent coastline views, carry on, though, with cocktails coaxing less-than-enthusiastic dancers onto the floor with their honeys. The action shifts into high gear when lovely strangers exchange lustful glances. But you knew that, didn’t you? Still, as with so many books, the joy is in the journey, so don’t deny readers the guilty pleasure of this light but perfect evocation of P-Town, its crowded Commercial Street, and its lovely sunsets.
