Yes I Said Yes I Will
Judith McDaniel
udith McDaniel’s novel, ‘Yes I Said Yes I Will,’ tells the intertwined stories of two lesbian women, Andie Wycoff and a Black woman whose name we don’t learn, during a time of big social changes. We see the world through the Black narrator’s eyes, which gives us an important look at how race, sexuality, and activism mixed together, especially within the mostly white feminist movement.
The book follows how Andie, a white lesbian feminist figuring out her place in the world and in the feminist and lesbian movements, connects with the narrator. It shows the ups and downs of their relationship as they deal with attraction, getting close, and the difficulties of being together when race and politics play such a big role.
We also see how involved both women are in the big social movements of their time. The book shows their activism, the arguments and disagreements within these groups (especially about race and social class), and how their political beliefs change their personal lives. Both women are on a journey to understand who they are as lesbians and where they fit in society. The book explores their inner struggles, how they came out to themselves and others, and the challenges of being true to themselves in a world that isn’t always accepting.
A really important part of the story is the narrator’s experience with racism within the mostly white lesbian feminist community. This part of the book makes it clear why it’s so important to think about how different parts of our identities intersect and the specific struggles that women of color face within these movements.
Even though there are difficulties and differences, the book ultimately shows how connecting with others, standing in solidarity, and love can help people overcome divides and find strength when facing unfairness.
The title, ‘Yes I Said Yes I Will,’ which comes from a famous part of James Joyce’s book Ulysses, suggests ideas of saying ‘yes’ to life, to desire, and to commitment ? both in personal relationships and in the bigger fight for freedom and equality.
In short, ‘Yes I Said Yes I Will’ is a powerful story about love, identity, and activism during a time of great change. It gives us a thoughtful look at how race, sexuality, and the fight for a better world all come together.
