Zeit Der Maskierung by Claudia Schoppmann

Zeit Der Maskierung

Lebensgeschichten Lesbischer Frauen im ‘Dritten Reich’

Claudia Schoppmann

Schoppmann investigates the lives and stories of Lesbians in the Weimar Republic and during National Socialism. She is faced with little documentation but an appreciation for why these women would not come forward with their stories. Schoppmann provides a historical outline of state persecution of queers, and discusses the differences in policies and attitudes toward gay men (Paragraph 175) and Lesbians. Lesbians, for example, were allowed to avoid the camps if they got married and were ‘willing to adapt.’

In the camp, if they were denounced or refused to ‘adapt’, they were mostly assigned to the ‘anti-social’ group or other groups of prisoners and were not marked with a ‘pink angle’ because of their homosexuality like gay men.

Schoppmann then provides 10 biographies of Lesbians who share their stories of persecution and survival.
