The LGBTQ poets in this collection use a “post-confessional” style. Basically, they “confess” who they are—not just through their lyrics, but simply by being part of this workshop. Their level of openness varies wildly; some are more guarded and subtle, while others go all out.
Most of these writers don’t just come out and describe their queer identities directly. Instead, they use different characters and stories to hint at or evoke those feelings. They take the “confessional” vibe of traditional poetry but change it up—either by packing in queer themes or thinning them out. Either way, the final result is a queer perspective that’s visible even when (or especially because) the poet is being a bit indirect.
