Maid To Queer by Francisca Yuenki Lai

This ethnographic study explores the intersection of international labor migration and female same-sex desire among Indonesian domestic workers in Hong Kong. Based on two years of participant observation, Francisca Yuenki Lai examines how the structural constraints of live-in domestic work, migration policing, and mandatory training centers unintentionally foster spaces for alternative sexualities. The text details how these migrant women form communities, navigate strict religious and cultural expectations, and adopt specific subcultural gender roles (such as tomboi and cewek). Ultimately, the book challenges Western-centric queer narratives by demonstrating how transnational labor migration can act as a catalyst for discovering and enacting same-sex desire.
