On May 13, 1988, Stephen Roy Carr, a so-called mountain man living in Michaux State Forest in south central Pennsylvania, shot two women hikers, a lesbian couple, at their campsite near the Appalachian Trail. Rebecca Wight died; Claudia Brenner survived five bullet wounds to testify against him. Drawing on interviews and court records, H. L. Pohlman reconstructs the case and its path through the justice system, examining competing interpretations of the evidence (hate crime, sex crime or class crime) and how issues from defendants’ rights to mitigating circumstances shape judgments of culpability.
