The first full-length study of LGBT media activism, following the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). Based on participant observation, interviews and archival research at GLAAD’s New York and Los Angeles offices in 2000 and 2001, Vincent Doyle analyzes the GLAAD Media Awards and the organization’s responses to Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Eminem and Queer as Folk. He argues that ‘coming out’ to the mainstream has given way to a market-oriented ‘making out’ in the mainstream that favors respectable images of homosexuality, and weighs both the limits and the possibilities of mainstreaming.
