Based on forty-two interviews with lesbian, bisexual and queer Latinas and fourteen months of participant observation at LBQ Latina events in a northeastern city in 2007 and 2008, Katie L. Acosta examines how these women create and keep families. She looks at how they manage relationships with the families who raised them and with partners, children and friends, negotiate cultural expectations and compulsory heterosexuality, understand femininity, practice their faith, navigate interracial relationships, and raise children while staying connected to their families of origin.
