A study of lesbian, bisexual and queer women’s experiences of thinking about and trying to become parents, based on eighty-two interviews conducted in British Columbia in the late 1990s. Jacquelyne Luce follows experiences from 1980 to 2000, a period of major change in the regulation of assisted reproduction and the status of LGBT parents and same-sex partners. She examines ‘contracting’ relationships with donors, understandings of biology and genetics, and decision-making amid social, legal and medical developments, setting women’s stories against public debate about queer parenting and reproductive technology and identifying gaps in legislative reform.
