Deliberate Harm by J.R. Wolfe

Portia Marks and Imma Thoms fell in love in Iraq the way people do when mortality is standing next to you. Imma was the combat surgeon who kept Portia alive after the roadside bomb. They got engaged. They went to Zimbabwe together to do humanitarian work. Then Imma was arrested on charges that were fabricated and executed trying to escape. Portia came home to Chicago and processed it the only way available: work during the day, drink through the nights. That’s what unbearable grief looks like when you’re functioning. Then a stranger stops her on the street and says Imma is alive. Before he can say anything else, someone shoots him dead. That’s the mechanism. That’s what starts the machine moving. The book doesn’t stay in Chicago. It spreads across three countries—Zimbabwe, South Africa, London—layering complications onto what should be simple: a woman trying to find out if her fiancée survived. A terrorist organization. A CIA conspiracy. A Russian crime syndicate. All of them have stakes in whether Imma lives or dies, whether she stays hidden or gets exposed. All of them are willing to kill to control the outcome. There’s a dirty bomb in London. The final act gets a clock. Time becomes the pressure that forces every character toward their breaking point. It is an enormous amount of plot. Wolfe doesn’t flinch from it. She commits fully—to the action, to the geopolitical machinery, to the fact that sometimes love stories live inside thrillers and sometimes the thriller is just the shape that desperate devotion takes when the world is actively trying to prevent it.
