Immensely popular in her lifetime, the Anglo-Irish writer Elizabeth Bowen (1899-1973) has since been treated as a peripheral figure, despite ten novels, nearly eighty short stories and a substantial body of nonfiction. Using semiotics, psychoanalysis, narratology and deconstruction, Ren e C. Hoogland offers a radical re-reading of Bowen’s novels from a lesbian feminist perspective, focusing on gender and sexuality and on the unstable, destabilizing effects of sexuality in her fiction.
