Gay Parenting by Joy A. Schulenburg

Gay Parenting

A Complete Guide for Gay Men and Lesbians with Children

Joy A. Schulenburg

Addresses the unique problems faced by gay parents, such as how and when to tell your kids you are gay, how to help them overcome prejudice, and how to prepare for custody battles

From Publishers Weekly

Schulenburg, a lesbian, is raising her daughter (now four years old) in a household with two friendsboth gay menwho act as co-parents. Here she provides advice and support to other lesbians and gay men who are raising children. Besides recounting her own experience, the author relies on information gleaned from conversations with and questionnaires completed by hundreds of gay parents, whom she quotes extensively as she discusses support groups, ‘coming out’ to one’s children, how children can be affected socially by gay parents, and marriages between gay and straight individuals. Also covered are such topics as the impact of AIDS on gay parenting, artificial insemination for lesbians, adoptions and foster-parenting as options for lesbians and gay men, and obtaining sole or joint custody after divorce. Schulenburg cuts no corners, providing a thorough and frank examination of issues of concern to gay parents. Appendixes list relevant services, organizations and further reading. November

From Library Journal

This is a useful survey of the major issues of concern to lesbians and gay men who have children, or who want to have them. It is the first book both comprehensive in scope and directed to male and female readers. Schulenburg alternates between reporting the results of her research and offering advice, which results in some confusion of purpose and fairly rough transitions. She never gives a full report of the results of her survey, a regrettable fault. Several chapters (e.g.,’Married and Gay,’ ‘ AIDs,’ ‘ Adoption’) are inadequately developed. A good bibliography and a dissappointingly inadequate directory make up almost a fourth of the book. Despite these criticisms, this is the best single source of information available on this topic. Recommended for public libraries. James Michael MacLeod, formerly with Drew Univ. Lib., Madison, N.J.
