Drawing on interviews and surveys of one hundred Black gay women in New York City, Mignon R. Moore examines how race and class shape the way they understand their sexuality, find partners and form families. She looks at how women who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s carry that past into communities that do not always accept their openly gay lives, and overturns assumptions drawn from research on white, middle-class lesbian feminists by focusing on Black American and Caribbean communities.
