According to the publishers this rich and spellbinding novel covers three generations of English life, from the 1860’s up to the turbulent days of World War II. They forgot to add that it’s a suspense novel. The question, two thirds of the way through is what can possibly happen next. At this point, heroine Katie, who had started life as a scullery maid, was raped by the young master at fifteen, became pregnant, was married off to a sadist. Her father was hanged for killing said sadist, mother was driven insane. Katie herself, imprisoned falsely for prostitution, is confronted by her old seducer Bernard who has deliberately married off his son to their (Bernard’s and Katie’s) daughter. We forgot to mention that there have also been scenes with Katie’s glandular idiot sister, and scenes with Bernard’s lesbian sister who is in love with Katie and scenes with a Swedish sea captain who also loves Katie but naturally can’t marry her because he’s already married, etc., etc. Now what could possibly happen next? Lots. Lo and even unto the third generation. With Katie weeping in every other chapter. It’s splendiferous pulp, the kind that you just can’t put down.
