The lesbian subculture in Moscow is a heterogeneous space of social interaction and cultural production that draws on Russian mainstream culture, other Russian subcultures and global cultural flows, some more compatible than others. Globalized ideas of what a gay and lesbian community should be are only partly compatible with Russian reality: Western emphasis on visibility and radical activism must be reconciled with a totalitarian past, an increasingly authoritarian present, and the practices that let people live and even thrive under a repressive regime. The subculture also has its own traditions, knowledge and practices, with poetry, music, literature and art at its core, along with visual and grammatical cues, styles, jokes and lesbian genders. The study is based on fieldwork, participant observation and interviews in Moscow and St Petersburg in 2005, with return visits in 2006 and 2007.
