It has long been assumed, from antiquity to a recent episode of Friends, that straight men fantasize about sex between women. Lesbian images appear in Penthouse and Playboy and in advertising, yet they have received little critical attention. This special issue of GLQ turns scholarly light on male attraction to lesbianism, recasting Freud’s question as ‘what does a man want from women who want other women?’ Some essays take on the legacy of salacious imagery made by men; others trace links between male constructions of female homoeroticism and lesbian self-representation. Gretchen Schultz examines how the first American lesbian organization, the Daughters of Bilitis, took its name from a nineteenth-century soft-core literary hoax, while Naomi Schor’s ‘Male Lesbianism’ and Brigitte Mahuzier’s ‘Rodin’s Sapphic Couples’ argue that Flaubert and Rodin identified with lesbian figures as subjects rather than objects.
