The first interdisciplinary study of the cultural practices and ideologies that shaped the reading of Sappho’s songs in the earliest stages of her reception. Yatromanolakis examines vase paintings and ancient texts from the late archaic, classical and early Hellenistic periods, focusing on the symposion, to show how Sappho’s poetry was absorbed into diverse social, aesthetic and performance contexts, drawing on archaeology, papyrology and anthropology.
