Martyred saints, Moors, Jews, viragoes, hermaphrodites, sodomites, kings, queens and cross-dressers appear in these essays on sexual diversity in Iberia from the tenth to the sixteenth century, as political power passed from Muslim to Christian hands. Drawing on sources in Castilian, Latin, Arabic, Catalan and Galician-Portuguese, from the martyrdom of Pelagius to the transgender Catalina de Erauso, the contributors examine race, gender, sexuality, nation-building, colonialism and empire, including both male and female homoeroticism as literary discourse.
