Society insists that women do not rape women, and the legal system, women’s services and lesbian and gay communities are poorly equipped to respond when they do. Drawing on a nationwide survey and in-depth interviews with seventy women, Lori B. Girshick documents lesbian and bisexual women’s experiences of sexual violence by other women, from date and acquaintance rape to abuse by partners and workplace harassment, how they responded and whether they found help. She examines how myths of a lesbian utopia, homophobia, biphobia and heterosexism have silenced survivors, and recommends how agencies can serve survivors of woman-to-woman rape and lesbian battering.
